Hello – John Horde here again with my second story synopsis. The Two Towers is the second novel of Doctor Tolkein’s Lords Of The Ring trilogy. As a privileged insider I have some good information that Peter Jackson’s second movie will follow the plot of this book fairly closely. With that in mind, you should be aware that this synopsis will contain some BIG spoilers.

Again my thanks go to the intrepid individuals who braved the queues of literature geeks and Tolkein wierdos and entered a bookshop to find a copy of this novel.

Book 2 - The Two Towers

Aragon and the elf and the dwarf decide to chase some Orks who have abducted a pair of hobbits and pursue them across some fields. They find that the Orks have been attacked and killed by some roving horsemen from a nearby town called Rohan. After talking to these horsemen they discover that the hobbits escaped into some woodland nearby. They decide to let the Hobbits go.

Suddenly Gandalf appears from the forest and tells them all that he didn’t die when he plunged down the mineshaft. His clothes were destroyed and he wandered about until he met another Wizard called Saraman. He discovered that Saraman was working for the evil Wizard Sauron and had an argument with him. Saraman used some magic spells to imprison Gandalf in a tower. Luckily, Gandalf found some of Saraman’s trademark white clothing and, disguising himself as his jailer, escaped on the back of one of his pet eagles.

The scene then shifts to show us the two hobbits who are captured by a giant walking, talking tree in the forest. The tree thinks that they have been cutting down other trees but when they tell the tree that it is, in fact, the evil Saraman’s orks who have been cutting down trees, all the trees get angry and decide to attack Saraman’s castle.

Meanwhile, Aragon, Gandalf and the others ride to the town of Rohan where they discover that the King, Theoden, has been hypnotised by Wormtongue, an Ork who works for Saraman. Theoden has been convinced that he cannot walk but Gandalf brings him out of his trance and chases Wormtongue who escapes back to Saraman’s mountaintop castle.

When he learns that his secret plan has been uncovered, Saraman sends an army of orks to attack the castle of Rohan. In the middle of a terrible battle, all the orks are killed by the walking trees who appear, just in the nick of time.

The army from Rohan ride to Saraman’s castle and find that the trees have destroyed it. They are holding Saraman prisoner but, when Gandalf tries to talk to him, he throws a magical crystal ball, narrowly missing one of the Hobbits.

When Gandalf looks in the crystal ball he sees that the Evil Sauron has been amassing a large army near to the fabled realm of Gondar. Gandalf decides to ride to Gondar and warn mad King Denethor. He rides on ahead with one of the hobbits while the army of Rohan follow him.

Aragon suggests to the Rohanese that they should take a short cut through some caves in a mountain but the Rohanese soldiers refuse, telling him that the caves are haunted. Only Legolas the dwarf and Glimli the elf agree to follow him. In the caves they do meet some ghosts but Aragon convinces them to help him and they follow the three brave warriors out of the other side of the mountain.

The scene then switches to follow the other hobbit Frodo and his slave, Sam. They climb over some mountains and meet an evil frog called Gollum. Frodo uses the power of the Ring to force Gollum to guide him to the land of Mordar. On the way they meet some soldiers from Gondar who take them prisoner. However, the soldiers realise that they are friendly and let them go on their way.

Gollum leads them up a mountain path past an evil haunted castle. To avoid the castle, he tells the hobbits that they can take a shortcut through a cave. The hobbits don’t realise that a giant spider lives in the cave. The spider is a friend of the frog Gollum. Gollum has spoken to the spider and said that he will bring some hobbits for her to eat as long as she give him Frodo’s precious ring. The spider attacks the hobbits and ties Frodo up with some web. The slave, Sam stabs the spider with a knife and manages to rescue the ring and escape, just in time to see some Orks from the haunted castle carrying Frodo away.

Obviously there is no way Peter Jackson could make this ragbag novel into a successful movie without major revisions. Another villain beginning with "S"! Talking trees! You've got your work cut out with this, Pete.
