Hello, Winja Celeborn here with another excerpt from the Lord Of The Rings audition scripts which have made their way to my dojo under a veil of secrecy. This is Peter Jackson's version of the first meeting between Arwen and Aragorn in the gardens of Rivendell. It is a rather touching scene and is completely faithful to the accounts given in the Appendices.

Liv Tyler as Arwen

SCENE: Nighttime in the gardens of Rivendell. ARAGORN is sitting alone on an ornamental bench, thinking to himself as he idly whittles away at a short stick with his knife. From behind a bush, ARWEN, glides silently towards him. Suddenly ARAGORN whirls round to face his visitor.

ARAGORN (apologetically)
Your pardon, my lady! You came upon me at unawares.

ARWEN
My pardon is given, my Lord Aragorn.

ARAGORN
You have me a disadvantage, my lady. I was not aware that Master Elrond had visitors. Especially visitors of such... beauty.

ARWEN(smiles coyly)
I thank you for your compliment but I am not a visitor here. Imladris is my home.

ARAGORN
Though I have dwelt here for many years, I cannot say that I have ever met you, my lady. I should not have forgotten such a pleasing countenance. Come, what is the answer to this puzzle?

ARWEN
Oh foolish mortal! Think you that the years of your life are more than a fleeting moment to we of the Eldar? And yet I find you strangely attractive for a... a... man.

(ARWEN's eyes glaze for a second as she gazes at ARAGORN then she shakes her head and continues)

ARWEN (cont.)
Though I have dwelt in Lorien, the home of my Mother's family, since before you were born, manling, Imladris is my true home, and the home of my father. I am Arwen, the daughter of Elrond and Celebrian.

ARAGORN
Yes, I see it now! Elrond never told me his daughter was so comely. Would you grant me a boon, my lady, and walk with me under the sun in the morning, so that I might see your beauty more clearly?

ARWEN(shocked)
THE SUN!
(Composing herself) I am afraid that I am but recently returned from Lorien and am suffering from, er, pony lag and will need to rest during the hours of daylight. But come, let us walk now at whiles under the starry vaults of Ea. I find myself strangely drawn to you, mortal. There is something of the Kingly in you, I deem.

ARAGORN
Your insight serves you well, my lady. For in my veins runs the blood of the Kings of Gondor and Arnor

ARWEN
The Blood of Kings? I find the thought of that most attractive.

ARWEN licks her lips as she gazes at ARAGORN.

ARWEN (cont)
Come, let us walk.

ARAGORN
As you wish, but please permit me to first dispose of this.

(He holds up the stick he has been whittling and which now has a sharp point)

ARWEN (recoiling in fear)
Noooo! Take it from me!!!!

ARAGORN (taken aback)
My apologies my lady!

(ARAGORN throws the stick behind a bush, ARWEN composes herself again)

ARAGORN (making conversation)
Uh, er, My lady, in common with your kind, your looks belie your age. How is it that you age not and live far beyond the span of mortal men?

ARWEN
Oh, it's errm... uh.. something in the diet, I believe. But stand closer, that I may walk alongside you.

ARAGORN stands next to ARWEN. ARWEN bends her head towards ARAGORN's throat and opens her mouth only to recoil in horror.

ARWEN
My Lord, what have you been eating? There is an odour about you which I cannot countenance!

ARAGORN
Ah! You are referring to this I deem.

ARAGORN takes a small white onion-like object from his pocket

ARAGORN (cont)
It is a type of wild onion called "lossimel" by the Dunedain. In the common tongue it is known as "garlic". It is widely used in the meals of the Rangers and is effective against many ailments.

ARWEN
Well it is effective against me as well, I'm off!

If the shooting script matches the quality of the audition scripts, I think Peter Jackson is on to a winner. I have a number of other scripts in my possession but I shall withhold them for the present. However, if there is a scene from the book which is a particular favourite of yours, contact Jimcalagon and, if it is one of the scenes I possess, he may prevail upon me to publish it to a wider audience

namarië and sayonara,
